Summarizing informational texts teaches students to determine key and central ideas, which is a skill that is often required on state tests. But, more importantly, it is an important reading strategy that improves comprehension, and by extension, helps students become better writers.
What Is An Objective Summary?
An objective summary is a BRIEF retelling of an article, podcast, any literature, a story, or a film. It does not include the writer’s thoughts, opinions, or feelings. Rather, it includes facts only. Objective summaries are easy to teach and easy for students to write because they include specific elements and mostly follow a specific formula. Title/Author + Verb + 3 Key Points = Objective Summary.

This workshop takes all hassle out of teaching this skill. Simply share and go. It links to several informational articles and comes with sample responses for each one. Best yet, the articles are fascinating and can help students understand behavioral tendencies that can cause bullying, peer-pressure and emotional abuse. Understanding these concepts can teach them to protect themselves. My goal is to try to pair academic skills with social/emotional lessons when possible!
