Teaching Writing Without a Thesis Statement? That’s a Big NOPE!
Teaching essay writing without thesis statement is like teaching someone to drive without using road signs. Students can learn to focus their entire essay around a thesis statement if they understand how to write them! Fortunately, teaching thesis statement is surprisingly easy! Students need to know the elements that comprise a thesis statement: Topic, claim, reasons. It is helpful to give them a lot of practice identifying and developing these elements. Once students have mastered these skills, there are all sorts of activities, such as writing opposing thesis statement, identifying and fixing weak thesis statements, writing thesis statements for a variety of topics, and adding the missing elements of thesis statements, to help them quickly become expert thesis statement writers. Below are thesis statement activities I created for argumentative, informative, and literary analysis that can be purchased very affordably on Teachers Pay Teachers. Feel free to take a look.
