- Avoiding Fragment and Run-On Sentences (This is the most important skill to teach before embarking on any large writing assignment. Frags/run-ons will derail a student’s essay. They are the most common and damaging grammar mistakes of all and can make the paper nearly impossible to grade.

Students will learn how to write a perfect thesis statement that will be the basis for their entire essay. Then, students will be guided through the full writing process with explanations, examples, and templates for each step. This unit is NOT formulaic writing. Rather, students are taught to think about each step of the process and make wise choices using a solid framework. Best of all, they will learn to keep their essays relevant to the topic and avoid extraneous filler that makes grading miserable.
