Teaching Argumentative Essay Writing and Thesis Statement With The Most Effective Resources

This complete argumentative writing kit is all you will ever need to thoroughly teach a high quality argument unit. What makes this bundle special? Each resource was designed and honed over the course of my 14 year career as a writing teacher. Grading thousands of student essays has allowed me to see the common mistakes students make and to adjust my workshops to meet these needs. As a result, my own students’ writing has improved tremendously and I feel rewarded by their success!

Students Learn To:

  • Write an engaging hook and avoid bad, cliché hooks
  • Provide relevant background information
  • Write a strong 2 or 3 prong thesis statement (FULL Separate Workshop)
  • Write a convincing counterargument
  • Write thesis-related topic sentences
  • Provide strong evidence the supports the thesis
  • Use effective transitions to promote clear writing
  • Elaborate upon and discuss evidence
  • Provide a strong conclusion that revisits the thesis statement and brings the essay full circle by revisiting the hook.
  • Write complete sentences and avoid the common and damaging mistakes of fragments and run-ons.

4 Components Of This Unit:

  • Thesis Statement Workshop
  • Argumentative Writing Workshop (thesis-centered)
  • Avoiding Fragment and Run-On Sentences (This is the most important skill to teach before embarking on any large writing assignment. Frags/run-ons will derail a student’s essay. They are the most common and damaging grammar mistakes of all and can make the paper nearly impossible to grade.
  • 9 Real Student Sample Essays With Rubrics For Students To Analyze and Highlight. These samples are of varying degrees of quality ranging from poor to advanced. This activity is perfect for use in STATIONS!

Students will learn how to write a perfect thesis statement that will be the basis for their entire essay. Then, students will be guided through the full writing process with explanations, examples, and templates for each step. This unit is NOT formulaic writing. Rather, students are taught to think about each step of the process and make wise choices using a solid framework. Best of all, they will learn to keep their essays relevant to the topic and avoid extraneous filler that makes grading miserable.
